A New School-Year Tradition
The 2026–2027 school year is here, and this year brings a meaningful change for our family.
For the first time in 19 years, we won’t be gathering on the front stoop for our traditional back-to-school photo.
Our youngest is starting college this fall.
As we’ve watched our children grow, that familiar front stoop has quietly become part of our family’s story. Year after year, we stood in the same place, took the same photo, and marked another beginning.
This year, we’re hoping to start a new version of that tradition: a back-to-school selfie in front of her dorm.
It’s a little different—but maybe that’s what new chapters are supposed to be.
The Meaning of the Front Door
When we purchased Whitebird Woodcraft, we began thinking about something we had probably taken for granted for years:
How many important moments happen at a front door?
Think about your own home.
The front door has probably been there for countless beginnings and endings.
It’s where children head out for their first day of school.
Where teenagers leave for their first job.
Where friends arrive for dinner.
Where grandparents come to visit.
Where we say goodbye when someone leaves for an adventure—and where we welcome them home again.
A front door is more than an entryway.
On one side is home.
It’s our haven, our comfort, and our own little world.
On the other side is everything beyond it—adventure, opportunity, new experiences, and memories waiting to be made.
And sometimes, standing in that doorway means being ready to let someone we love step into that wider world.
Every Door Has a Story
This is part of what makes what we do at Whitebird Woodcraft so meaningful to us.
We build doors, but we know they’re rarely just doors.
They’re part of the places where life happens.
They’re part of the homes where families grow, celebrate, gather, change, and make memories.
A beautiful front door might be the first thing someone sees when they arrive at your home, but over the years, it becomes part of the background of your life.
And that’s something we don’t take lightly.
Wishing Families a Wonderful Year
To every family beginning the 2026–2027 school year, all of us at Whitebird Woodcraft wish you well.
Whether you’re sending a little one off to kindergarten, watching your teenager begin their final year of high school, or—like us—sending your youngest off to college, we hope you embrace the adventure ahead.
Celebrate the milestones, even the small ones.
Take the pictures.
Make the traditions.
And when the time comes to open the door and send someone you love into the next chapter, remember that the door will still be there when they come home.
Here’s to new beginnings, new adventures, and all the memories waiting on the other side of the door.
